Clever Copper

Copper is an essential nutrient required by virtually all higher life forms; a component of dietary nutrition that enables the body to metabolize energy and function properly. As with humans, plants and animal health rely on adequate copper intake. The world's two most important food crops - rice and wheat - are both highly dependent on sufficient copper in soil.

As I read through Christopher Cook's deeply disturbing book 'Diet for a Dead Planet' I'm astonished I haven't died of food poisoning long since! Last year alone 75 million Americans became sick through the food they ate and 5,000 of them died, according to the flyleaf. As you read this next statistic, '25% of mothers breast milk in the USA is so contaminated by toxic chemicals that it could not be bottled and sold as a food commodity,' you may wonder how we can possibly safeguard any future generation at all. Christopher Cook suggests we find ways to change the entire system and in the meantime become very aware of making conscious choices. If the degradation of our food supply is inextricably linked to factory farming, growth hormones, cheap livestock feed, not only laced with increasing amounts of antibiotics but made from produce livestock don't eat naturally, perhaps this leads us directly to the doorstep of the smaller and more 'ethically' minded producers.

Monty Python's (paraphrased) immortal words are apt about our newly ex-team members Helena Witkin, Andy Metcalfe and Monika Kshatriya. No longer fully immersed in our project they will contribute when they can, which I believe makes it 'au revoir' rather than goodbye! Helena is having an enviable time in South Africa while Andy is channelling his energy into Holistic Local. We send Monika our love from the UK.
