| Clever Copper |
 |
US pennies made before 1982 are mainly made from copper. After that date they were coated instead as the value of copper was more than the value of the coin! So, if you find a
stash of pre-1982 pennies, they'll be worth 2c each! In fact, as the value of copper is on the increase, this could be a good investment opportunity. According to this source, the Gold Why Webmaster, 'in 10-20 years those who didn't invest in copper will be very disappointed'!

| Ode-io! |
 |
If you don't want to air your voice but still want to be heard, then write a line in answer to this question: Bicycle - what are you like? Matt Harvey our poet, who The Times describes as 'a word-based organism from Devon', will create a reader poem from all the lines collected and we may even get him to record it for posterity. The last ode-io 'Handbag - what are you like?' had such gems as:
Holder of all secrets tawdry and sublime,
Collector of tickets and old lipstick slime.
Send your 'bicycle' one liners to me.

| The Sin-thing |

In the 1920's, some churches preached disinvesting from 'sin stocks' - alcohol, gambling and tobacco. Today, the definition of sin stocks has changed. More and more investors are veering towards Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), or investing on eco-friendly projects that give reasonably good returns...See

| Water way to go |

Using water as currency seems strange - we all tend to take water for granted, don't we? But did you know, it takes 22,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of beef? Scientists now believe that money shouldn't be the only unit to calculate the cost of any given product - we should also consider how much water was used in its production. Intrigued? Read on here

| Carbon copy |

Paying for your excesses isn't easy. But the controversial system of carbon credits has made it so. You 'buy' credits by supporting companies that reduce carbon emissions - you 'spend' credits by emitting one tonne of carbon dioxide per credit, into the atmosphere. For more on the emissions trade, read
Carbon credits have spurred a new generation of entrepreneurs selling clean technologies. One such innovator has created a stove that uses biomass briquettes (compacted crop waste) as fuel. His clean-burning stove not only reduces carbon emissions, it also effectively uses waste that would have required additional energy. Read about Ramesh Nibhoria and his revolutionary stove here

| Save the Planet (and your money) |
| |
The tipping point is here - that amazing moment when the cost of something comes down as it achieves popularity. There's money to be saved, and money to be made if you have the inclination, by turning a deeper shade of green. In the UK alone there may be 14 million homes still on non-green energy tariffs. Making the change to a more ethical tariff can be effortlessly achieved through www.greenhelpline.com saving GDP 1.2 billion pounds as well as 20 million tonnes of CO2 emissions between them! | A Lot of Balls! |
 |
|
More than 250 naked cyclists created a bit of a sight in Mexico City last weekend. Chanting 'Save your planet, use a bicycle' and bravely wearing only the painted slogan 'emission free vehicle' on their backs, the passionate riders hoped to gain greater visibility. The authorities are building more cycle lanes but with 4 million vehicles already on the road, and annual increases of 250,000, it's hard to halt the tide.

| Banking on the Green Ghost |
 |
'Respect is due to the Co-op bank which has led the way in the funding of global ethical projects supporting sustainable schemes to help people out of the poverty trap. They have, since 1992, had an ethical banking policy that does not invest in bad environmental or human practices. Thirteen years later they introduced the ethical engagement policy to engage the world of insurance that aims to change big companies from the inside. They are the first large company to go beyond carbon neutral in the way they do business and publish a quarterly Eco-friendly magazine for all members. The magazine is packed with great ideas to do your bit to save the planet. Others following in the footsteps of the Co-op include Triodos Bank which supports many sustainable projects and the Ecology Building Society which helps people obtain the funds for green building projects. Have a look at www.alotoforganics.co.uk for further details of eco banking. For more sustainable news go to here
