Did you know - ninety six percent of Grameen Bank's borrowers are women? The ladies form groups of five that are responsible for repaying the debts of all their group members. If they default, the whole group forfeits the right to borrow further... See..
For banks, collateral equal creditworthiness. But micro loans have given thousands of people the chance to earn their livelihood instead of depending on subsidies, handouts, or charity. See...

Everywhere I see the word debt. In the western world almost every adult is in debt, although they may not perceive it like that. Mortgages, car repayments, credit cards etc; all part of our normal day to day life. But I wonder if at the back of everyone's mind is that seed of anxiety which reminds you that your life as you know it is at threat. Debt means you owe someone, and when you owe the bank, or the government, the debt can always be called in. I have found out some fascinating facts about debt. Read on...

The developing world now spends $1.3 on debt repayment for every $1 it receives in grants. Nigeria borrowed around $5 billion and has paid about $16 billion, but still owes $28 billion. That $28 billion came about due to bias in the foreign creditors' interest rates.
7 million children die each year as a result of the debt crisis.
In the 52 Jubilee 2000 countries, a total of 1 billion people shoulder a debt burden of £286 billion. It is interesting to note that this is less than the total net worth of the world's 21 richest individuals.
In 1999, $128 million was transferred from the poorest countries to the richest for debt repayments - EACH DAY. Of this, $53 million was from East Asia and the Pacific, $38 million from South Asia and $23 million from Africa.
Canceling the debts of all 52 Jubilee 2000 countries would only cost one penny a day for each person in the industrialized world for 20 years. (Source: worldcentric.org)

| The weird truth about debt? |
 |
You may think you know where money comes from, but do you really? The Mint may print our paper money and manufacture our coins but it seems that our Banks 'create' the money. What's more, it's created from generating loans. In a way money is created out of thin air, or is it hot air? According to Paul Grignon's animated video, loans are what the economy is founded upon, and it seems a little precarious to me. Watch it here and let me know what you think. (Source:

The first quote to go on a Starbucks cup was from Denis Hayes, best known as an environmental leader and solar energy expert. He said, 'America's skyrocketing national debt deeply affects our ability to address every other issue, from protecting the environment to combating terrorism. A bankrupt nation is a weak nation'. | In Debt To The Predator |
 |
The evolution of man may have been triggered by co-habiting with massive sabre toothed felines at Sterkfontein in the heart of the cradle of civilisation in South Africa. Our transition to meat-eating, fire-making animals converted us from hunted to hunter according to CK Brain, a paleoanthropologist. According to lion shaman, Credo Mutwa, this was a sacred contract between man and lion. The most sacred cat of all is the rare White Lion - bred almost solely in captivity to feed the avaricious canned hunting industry. What an extraordinary way to repay our debt.
To help return these lions to the wild, and see some fabulous photos of them, connect with CopperStrings member Karen Jane Dudley here.

'In the midst of debt we are in credit - but not necessarily financially.'
If you wonder about Empath Man and the Wondermentalist Cabaret check out this fantastic review and book your seats for the next one. (Source:

'This world is such a false place in which to live. I once heard a college
student tell her friends that a credit card is just that...a credit card...so don't pay it off to remain in credit as you do in a computer game! I wish. Would it not be great to spend money and not pay it back ? Better still, not have to rely on money as people in Totnes do? There one works for food, clothing...even great books without smelly, sordid money changing hands. A barter system that gives you the power to gain 'wealth' without corruption....sorry I am off again. To help people with debt there is the Co-op bank, citizens advice and local community schemes supporting people out of their depth with debt. Perhaps, at the end of the day, we all aspire beyond our means as the Dickens saying goes...income one pound...expenditure twenty three shillings and six pence - bliss. ( This was before we were robbed of 14 shilling in a pound to just 10 in old money) Income one pound - expenditure onepound and six pence - destitute! We can all pull back from the fire - but will we...?'

If you're in debt or simply anxious about money, focussing on it may not be the best use of your attention. Deciding what you want and letting go of old anxieties, beliefs, attitudes and expectations could be of particular value. Lisa Pearson, the UK's very own Demartini teacher has devised a neat one day seminar specifically for you to work on your attitude towards your finances to help support your financial growth. I recommend her every time!
