| Darkest Hours and New Dawns |
 |
|
A dead body floated by the window of my sisters boat this morning (she lives on a Dutch Barge on The Thames in Battersea, London). It was the body of a woman about my age. My sister telephoned me to make sure I hadn't fallen in and drowned when I left her last night. It's a fear of mine. I can imagine the loneliness of drowning in The Thames at night with no one being aware.
Life is our most precious commodity, and yet we seem to forget that. Earth is our only home and we seem to forget this too.
The Earth is feverish; major floods in Eastern Australia where hundreds of people have been evacuated and some parts of New South Wales receiving 12 inches of rain overnight; an earthquake of 6.5 in Greece with no apparent casualties; an undersea earthquake near Sumatra in Indonesia also without any fatalities so far reported; a mud volcano in Indonesia breaching its barriers; extraordinary floods in Mozambique where 3 towns are underwater, 5000 people evacuated, and a further 60,000 who may have to be evacuated (although the death toll is less than 10 so far); 1.5m Zambians may also have to flee from their homes because of flooding; powerful storms on the US West Coast and 2 earthquakes of 6.5 off the west coast of Canada….. and news just in that a 6.4 earthquake has hit deep off the Oregon coast, 30,000 people in Sri Lanka have had to abandon their homes due to Monsoon flooding, 700 people have been evacuated to avoid falling ash from a Volcano in Ecuador and
avalanches are happening in many of the mountain ranges. (Source: www.planetark.org)

| Beckham is the new Big Foot |
 |
While coal and nuclear powered plants are being given the go-ahead, we've got David Beckham now crowned as the undisputed owner of the largest carbon footprint in history. He managed to generate 163 tons of CO2 compared to the average Britons footprint of 9.4 tons, according to Nigel Pauley of the Daily Star.

| Leonardo DiCaprio's 11th Hour |
 |
(www.11thhourfilm.com ). I went to see a screening of this film last week. Impactful images and a formidable army of experts from a variety of disciplines and organisations discuss their take on the challenge of climate change.
Leonardo asks us if we're going to allow this to be our darkest hour or choose it to be our finest moment.
Good question. What's your answer?
What inspired me most were the solutions put forward. Instead of the usual top ten of switching off lights and cycling to work, we had the likes of William McDonagh. Time Magazine's 'Hero for the Planet'. William is an architect and designer and he comments:
'If we think about the tree as a design, it's something that makes oxygen, sequesters carbon, fixes nitrogen, distils water, provides a habitat for hundreds of species, accrues solar energy, makes complex sugars and food, creates micro-climates, self-replicates. So, what would it be like to design a building like a tree? What would it be like to design a city like a forest? So, what would a building be like if it were photosynthetic? What if it took solar energy and converted it to productive and delightful use?' www.mcdonagh.com
The idea of looking deeply at nature, recognising we're not remotely separate from it, and learning how to change our world in alignment with it, is an extraordinarily inspiring vision for the future. It makes this the most amazing time to be alive. It means we can develop and evolve to reverse what damage we've generated.
We have the choice to become a more inclusive breed and sustain humanity or not.
"I have found that if you love life, life will love you back." Arthur Rubinstein

| Gagging for a giggle? |

Find
your way from whatever corner of the Universe
you're in and get to The Seven Stars,Totnes,
Devon in the UK, on the 25th January for the
2nd Wondermentalist Cabaret with Matt Harvey,
(our poet in e-residence) and an assortment
of sparkling performers. The feedback from
the launch event in December was brilliant
with comments such as;
'Based around poetry (Matt's most obvious specialite de la maison), the evening - the first, but certainly not the last, if the audience have anything to do with it - of fun and frivolity was also deep and meaningful, when and where necessary. Clearly, in the age of "witty banter", popularised by the likes of Top Gear, Dave TV and "Have I Got News for You?", there's a hunger for intelligent humour, and Matt's hand-picked squad of entertainers left us as well-fed, actually stuffed, as a proper Christmas dinner. I was definitely struggling to find room for another wafer-thin giggle, let alone another belly-laugh.' Carl Munson www.wndfl.com

| Get passionate |
 |
|
did the Passion Test last August and within
two weeks my entire life changed in accordance
with my top five passions! The strange thing
is that I already thought I knew what inspired
me, but what I got from this very enjoyable
experience was a real honing of what makes
me thrilled to be alive. I felt like I'd been
plugged into the mains, in the nicest possible
way, and it appears that all my intentions/wishes
and positive expectations are being laid in
front of me like a fabulous smorgasbord of
opportunity. Obviously I can't guarantee everyone
will have the same result, but I heartily
recommend you take a look.

Rather than strain your system with a two week fast, which stresses the body considerably, particularly if you've been over-feeding yourself in December, why not think about choosing a Raw Food Diet? I've heard there are fantastic benefits to this dietery choice and you can find out more here

On a lighter note: Ruben Kenig sent me this joke this morning:
According to a survey in this week's Time magazine, 85% of Americans think global warming is happening. The other 15% work for the White House.
