| Embracing research |

In a study some years ago, the journal "Pediatrics" documented a remarkably powerful pain reliever for children - hugs! In this randomized, controlled trial at Boston Medical Center, some infants received full body, skin-to-skin contact with their mothers while others were swaddled in their cribs during the newborn heel-stick blood test. Those who were hugged had measurably less pain, with 82% less crying, 65% less grimacing, and significantly lower heart rates. We can't stop our children from having painful experiences, but our loving hugs are more powerful than we think at decreasing our children's suffering. Source www.drgreene.com

| Green Goes Gorgeous |

 You know it's finally sexy to be environmentally friendly when the likes of Hummer and Lamborghini get into green gear! General Motors have their ethanol powered Hummer HX prototype at the Geneva Auto Show. Lamborghini are on show with the greener version of their Gallardo - with its body 44lbs trimmer, its revamped engine drives it from 0-100kph in 3.7s with carbon emissions cut by 18%. But my favourite is this completely adorable car, the PGO Cevennes Turbo powered by natural gas apparently makes it carbon neutral. Give me its 0-100kph in 6.5s anytime over the Lambo! Cute or what?

The cars mentioned above mark your status - affluent, powerful, successful. And yet this fast paced lifestyle is so much tougher to green up. Is it time to downshift; become slower people, more in balance with our families, our environment and our lives? Tracey Smith, from the newly expanded InterNational Downshifting Week (19th -25th April) has created a petition to email to 10 Downing Street. Its message and request is to get sustainable living lessons in all schools. Now why hasn't anyone thought of that before?
